Covid-19 Consultation Opportunity from Council for Disabled Children

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought unprecedented challenges to all children and young people, and these can be particularly hard for those young people with a special educational need and/or a disability (SEND).

NCB is currently doing a national consultation to hear from children and young people with SEND, aged between 5-25, about the impact of the pandemic on them - how lockdown has impacted their support network, academic goals, and social and emotional wellbeing and what can be learned from this.

Now more than ever we need to create spaces for children and young people with SEND to influence decision making at a strategic level. This consultation will give opportunities to children and young people to share their experiences and voices. The findings will be given to the Department of Education and other key stakeholders to contribute to the national pandemic recovery discussion to support children and young people with SEND to grow their wellbeing and resilience.

The consultation is taking place between February-mid March.  It could also be that it’s more appropriate for you to speak with your children and young people rather than someone who doesn’t know them - we’re wanting to make this work in whatever way is best for them.

This project is being delivered for us by one of our partner organisations, Kaizen (www.kaizen.org.uk) who have consulted with thousands of children and young people and worked with a wide range of organisations including local authorities, over 400 schools, Action for Children, Barnardo’s, premier league football clubs and London 2012.

It would be great to have any Max Appeal members be part of this consultation.

Many people have also asked if there is also an opportunity for parents and staff to give their thoughts as practitioners  on the impact of the pandemic on their children and young people/those they work with - we have an online questionnaire where they can do this if they would like to as their input would be very valuable.
