22q11DS APPG in the papers
Stourbridge News reports!

22q11DS All-party Parliamentary Group
1st Meeting Tuesday 2nd December 2014
We now officially have a 22q11DS APPG! This may cause the admin people at House of Commons a bit of trouble seeing as the list for APPGs is A-Z so ours is the only one that's a number... hopefully should put us at the top of the list.In the full picture from left to right: Paul Wootton, Dr Clodagh Murphy, Gillian Cassidy, Julie Wootton, Jack Lopresti MP, Carla Attwood, Claire Hennessey, Keith Markham, Marcus Jones MP and Dr Alex Habel.
Jack Lopresti is chair, Margot James is vice, Alistair Burt was asking some questions. Alex Habel did a good run through of the condition. Gillian Cassidy from 22qNI pressed for how to engage with the NI MPs, Keith Markham from 22Crew made several comments from a parent's perspective too.
Margot James is going to request and adjournment debate in Westminster Hall, which is where ministers talk about one subject for an hour and half.
All in all really positive... next meeting is on (hopefully) 13th January to plan the launch at the end of February. The MPs all agreed that this is the best way to raise the profile of the condition, the Minister for Health should be at the launch.
After the last 'ask' for Max Appeal members to write to your MPs, another SIX joined the APPG in one week!

Family and Childcare Trust - need family stories
Calling for heart families whose child has special educational needs who maybe interested in sharing their experiences for a video of 'top tips'. Click to read more!
Family and Childcare Trust
The Family and Childcare Trust want to speak to parents of children with special educational needs and disabilities.
They are making a series of short films and written 'top tips' with parents of children with special educational needs and disabilities offering advice to other parents about accessing, choosing and paying for childcare. These are funded by the Department for Education and will be shared on our website, through our network of Family Information Services and with other partners in the childcare sector.
By contacting us there is no commitment to take part; they just want to hear from parents and talk about the advice they would pass on to other parents who are looking for childcare.
These stories will be compiled over the next few months (likely to be filmed in February) and we would like to speak to as many parents as possible.

We want to hear from parents about:
- Benefits of childcare – for child and the whole family
- Barriers they have overcome to be able to get the childcare they want
- Overcoming concerns and anxieties of staff at childcare settings towards taking a child with special educational needs and disabilities
- Overcoming their own anxiety about using childcare
- Funding they have accessed and how – specifically to pay for childcare
- Local services or particular people who have helped in finding, paying and using childcare
- Being able to use the same childcare for non-disabled siblings
- Transport issues to and from out of school club
- Childcare for older children- age appropriate activities
- Any nurseries, after school clubs and childminders who are very inclusive and what they have done to ensure each child has the same play and learning opportunities
- Plus any other issues that parents feel they could pass on information to other parents concerning childcare for their disabled child or child with special educational needs.

A general running programme of events will be as follows:
Session 1 - Putting. Location: Putting Green. Suitable for all participants. Description - 9-hole putting challenge. Players may hand in their lowest score.
Session 2 – 1 Hole challenge. Location - 1st Hole on the course. Description - Players are required to hit through a series of gates leading to the hole. A Point is rewarded for hitting through each gate and double points are rewarded for shots that fly through more than one gate. The gates will tempt the better players to be aggressive and allow less experienced players to capitalise with good strategy. This is suitable for moderately experienced players with or without handicaps.
Session 3 – Longest, Straightest and consistent drive challenge. Location - Golf hole or driving range. Description - Each player hits 10 shots to win either the longest or/and straightest drive. But, each of the 10 shots counts as overall consistency is measured as well. This is suitable for most players with or without handicaps.
Session 4 – Driving Range Skills Practise. Players can practise the full range of shots that can be expected during any normal round of golf. Specific shots will be set-up allowing players to hone their skills. This session also includes simple, non-technical, practise methods aimed at improving ball contact, direction, curvature and trajectory. This is a fun and relaxing way to develop the game. This is suitable for most players with or without handicaps.
Session 5 – Short Game Challenges. In a group of up to 12 players each individual player starts the game with 12 points. Each player chooses and marks the position of a single shot to defend their 12-points. Other players can steal points from the player on their marked position. The winner of the group is the player with the most points once each marked position is played from. This is a great fun way to play under pressure and sample the full variety of the short-game.
Session 6 - Mini-Golf. 6 Coloured Poles will be positioned in fair-to-difficult positions on the golf course. Players can play a 4-ball-texas scramble format for the lowest scores. Suitable for players with a handicap.

Max Appeal Express
Train Launch and Awareness Campaign
A First Capital Connect train specially branded 'Max Appeal' was launched at a ceremony at King's Cross Station.
Mark Tripp, father of Adam, 8 years - the inspiration behind the campaign, drove the train and guests to Cambridge.
India Knight
Max Appeal Ambassador India Knight, medical specialists from London hospitals including Great Ormond Street and over thirty children affected by 22q DS attended the event.
We were delighted India dedicated her whole column in the Sunday Times to raising awareness of 22q DS.
India wrote;
" The story of how this train came to be is so cheering and unlifting."
She goes on to say, " It's about kindness, tenacity and how one little human can make a difference"...."You or I might sit on our bottoms going ''Oh dear''. Instead, Mark wondered how he could alert other people to the fact that this condition exists and that it not being diagnosed causes terrible anxiety, pain and suffering. A train, he thought, being a train driver. We should name a train after the charity - it's called Max Appeal, after Max, the late son of its two founders - that brilliantly supports the parents of children with this diagnosis>"
India, the children and their families were joined by Alastair Burt MP, Dr Liam Fox MP, and Keith Jipps, Customer Service Director at First Capital Connect.
Keith Jipps, Customer Service Director, at FCC says;
"Speaking to some of the parents and the children, I really got the sense of the struggle that most have been through, so it is such a warm feeling when you hear all the happy stories from the day and see the smiles on everyone's faces."
He goes on to say;
" The train and trip to the wildlife park would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of Mark Tripp and we wanted to give Mark the support to make a difference"....."The reaction to the train has been massive with the VCFS 22Q11 Foundation in Australia calling it the 'biggest thing to happen in 22Q11 awareness' and the International Foundation in Philadelphia also featuring it. We are so delighted and proud to have played our part in giving 22Q11 the awareness that it needs."
Mark Tripp was able to tell Adam's story.
Mark said, " I talk to you all now as a proud railwayman, husband and father. My son Adam has 22q and due to the wonderful work by Max Appeal he is now getting the help he needs to thrive, for me personally today is about repaying that debt by raising awareness of a condition that affects 1 in 1800 births, around 35,000 children and adults, many of whom are undiagnosed."
Mark talks about finally receiving Adam's diagnosis, he says " When we were finally given Adam's diagnosis we felt relief and took comfort from the fact that we could move forward to help Adam tackle the challenges that lay ahead. We thought that most child care experts and medical staff would educate us about the syndrome, sadly this has not always been the case. Every time we attend another appointment outside the 22q teams it feels like the mental scars we carry are ripped open again. Please stop for a moment and image how our children, who are sat alongside us, must feel. They, after all, carry the mental and physical scars of 22q11 DS. Due to the efforts of First Capital Connect I hope this train will prevent other families going through the trauma we endured".
Mark's Message...
Mark gives us an insight into why this initiative is so important to him.
He says, " What drives me on as a parent and why am I so passionate about this initiative? When both my children were born I whispered the same thing to them, as they were obiously too young to remember, only I have known what I said until now. Adam and Zoe I made a promise that Daddy would be with you always, to guide and support you and to give you every chance in life. Well kids, this train is part of that promise!"
Not enough awareness of 22q DS
Keith Jibbs, Customer Service Director at FCC, talks about FCC's practical help;" There is not enough awareness of this condition so by putting up posters around our network and making our latest refreshed Class 365 train a moving billboard for Max Appeal and 22q DS we hope to help raise that awareness."

Max Appeal was delighted to thank all of its local business supporters who help make the work happen smoothly and cheaply!
The office is based at the Glasshouse College in Stourbridge, which is part of the Ruskin Mill Trust and provides a home for our Steph to do all the admin and database things... and there's quite a lot of it.
We are very grateful to Elizabeth Wood who supported our application to Ruskin to allow us to become tenants at a (very) peppercorn rent.

Pauline's inspiration to complete the Virgin London Marathon
I was working as a Learning Support Assistant at the local junior school when I first met Niamh.
She was about to start in mainstream school in year 3, after attending a specialist speech and language school previously.
I was to be assigned to her, as her support. Before meeting her, I was given some information about her that didn't paint the most pleasant of pictures! I was on guard and prepared for the worst.
Niamh came into school with very low levels. Her learning had been disrupted from an early age due to a condition called 22q11.2, which did not get diagnosed until she was five years old. She had undergone many operations, to repair a hole in her sub mucus cleft palette, that severely affected her speech. The condition also affected her in many other ways, so as a 7 year old girl, having to deal with many challenges in her life, I was prepared for a challenge myself.
How wrong could I be. Niamh was a pure joy to work with. She faced walls and barriers on a daily basis but always with a smile on her face. Her wicked sense of humour and her drive and ambition to learn was second to none, that it made my job an absolute joy and a pleasure to go to work each day. I have to say, I became very attached to this little girl.
I remained her support until she finished in year 6 and saw her make accelerated progress in her learning throughout the 4 years.
Niamh is a credit to herself and her family and I am so proud to be able to take part in this years London marathon and raise funds for the charity "Max Appeal," that have been available to Niamh and her family (and others with this condition,) to turn to when needed.
Please help me by donating to this charity that supports people like Niamh.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. So it's the most efficient way to donate – saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

How do you get to be the lucky people who go?
Well, first off, wish it was me!The criteria for allocating this fabulous break is fairly simple: "the scheme's objective is to reach deserving individuals rather than allocation by chance or wealth.(ie not an auction or raffle etc). So, email us and state your case in less than 200 words.
This offer is open until Friday 14th February... love it up, people!!
The trustees of Max Appeal will confer and their decision will be issued on Tuesday 18th February.
You MUST ensure that you can take up this fantastic offer BEFORE you put in you application.
We are so pleased to be able to bring this to you, as we know just how much many of you struggle to get away and that a really high quality property such as this really is a one off... it has a library and a skittle alley, for goodness sakes!!!
New Born Baby Info Leaflet - input needed!
In line with our Information Standard obligations, when we want to supply a new information leaflet we need approval from the potential users... pretty logical really!
If your baby was diagnosed antenatally or shortly after birth, or you are a professional in an associated field, then we would appreciate it if you could give us your feedback on this new piece of literature... and we've tried to make it as easy as possible for you to do so...
